Integrated Lumbopelvic-Hip

AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO THE ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT OF THE LUMBOPELVIC-HIP REGION

Review by Peter Huijbregts, editor for the Journal of Manual & Manipulative Therapy

This two-disc DVD set with 268 minutes of material is meant as a companion to the third edition of the Pelvic Girdle book by Diane Lee. The discs are recorded in a zone 0 format, which means they should play in DVD players and computers worldwide. Disc one first introduces the integrated model of function central to the approach to evaluation and management of lumbopelvic-hip dysfunction discussed in the book. It then discusses lumbopelvic and hip region examination techniques and interventions aimed at increasing joint mobility, decreasing unwanted global system activity, and correcting alignment. Disc two starts with reiterating the treatment principles and then continues with information on program development, the use of sacroiliac belts and taping, retraining of the local stabilizing system, and integration of local and global stabilizing systems.

The discs are narrated throughout in a concise and clear manner. This narrative is augmented by anatomical drawings, imaging studies, diagrams, and video clips, all of which clearly demonstrate the anatomical and biomechanical concepts and the examination and treatment techniques. At times, the material presented in the book is quite complex and having access to these discs certainly clarifies some of the harder to grasp concepts. Even though this DVD set is meant as a companion to the book, clinicians with some understanding of the form and force closure concept and the function of local and global stabilizing systems will benefit from this DVD set as a stand-alone resource. This DVD set will likely be of great interest to clinicians treating patients with lumbopelvic and hip dysfunction, allied health students, and faculty members teaching courses on this topic.
